Developing competency frameworks

Defining excellence
What makes a successful manager? What skills, knowledge and attitudes are needed by individuals if your organisation is to perform consistently at the highest level?

More and more organisations across the not-for-profit sector are developing competency frameworks – codifying standards of excellence for each level of manager.

At =mc we’ve worked with a wide range of not-for-profit organisations from the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, RNLI and Amnesty International to Ashford Council, developing bespoke competency frameworks.

Developing excellence
A competency framework is a wonderful tool, but how do you then assess how ‘competent’ your managers are? There are several options: you can ask people to assess themselves; you can ask people to undergo 360° assessment; or you can use a development centre.

While self and 360° assessments are an inexpensive option, they are by their nature subjective. A development centre – through a series of exercises based around your competency framework – provides a detailed, objective assessment of each individual's strengths and areas for development. The resulting individual and organisational development plans are then absolutely tailored to meet current and emerging needs. No more guesswork, no more ‘wasted’ training budget.

=mc's ideas and practical approaches have consistently proved powerful and helpful in our work. I would whole-heartedly recommend =mc to anyone looking for high quality training and consultancy.

Kate Gilmore, Executive Deputy Secretary General, Amnesty International

=mc has a wealth and breadth of knowledge, a terrific understanding and vast experience of the ethos and culture of the not-for-profit sector. This together with their 'anything is possible' approach made =mc an obvious choice for the RNLI to partner with, to develop and deliver in-house training for our staff.
