Strategy

Strategy Speakers and Sessions

The Strategy seminar will be hosted by Kate Gilmore and include sessions delivered by Caroline Harper, Bernard Ross and Will Campbell.

Caroline Harper

1. Defining new directions: the journey to transform Sightsavers

Caroline Harper OBE, CEO, Sightsavers

This session explores how a new CEO, brought in from the private sector, began a process to transform the strategic direction of a 60 year old charity. It will look at how Caroline engaged Sightsavers' stakeholders in establishing a new sense of identity and direction for the organisation, and how the balanced scorecard methodology was used as a tool to engage and focus everyone.

Caroline spent several years working in the energy industry, where she had a strong track record of successfully growing organisations. She was awarded the OBE for services to the gas industry in 2000. After several months of travel, Caroline decided to dedicate herself to the not-for-profit sector. She spent some time as non-executive director of Notting Hill Housing Group, and then joined Sightsavers in 2005.

Kate Gilmore

 2. Re-imagining business models: the new shape of organisations

Kate Gilmore, Principal Management Consultant, The Management Centre. Formerly Deputy Executive Secretary General, Amnesty International

This session explores how not-for-profit organisations can re-imagine their business (or operating) models. This is vital for engaging with emerging challenges, and this session will introduce you to tools that can facilitate this process. Kate will draw on her experience at Amnesty International, where she drove one of the largest INGO transformations of the last 10 years as the organisation reshaped its own business model. This change involved exploring strategy, finance and relationships with member organisations.

Before joining the Amnesty International HQ, Kate spent four years leading a national Amnesty branch out of financial, industrial and governance crisis into unprecedented growth. Previously, she worked in a range of management positions within the public health sector.

3. Interactive workshop sessions: 3 concurrent workshops

You will have the opportunity to take part in one of the three interactive sessions outlined below:

Will Campbell

a) Using the Balanced Scorecard

Will Campbell, Principal Learning & Development Consultant, The Management Centre

=mc has pioneered the use of strategy maps in the UK, Europe and internationally with organisations as diverse as Amnesty International, The UK Film Council and Mersey Forest Trust. This interactive workshop will draw on =mc case studies and participants’ own experiences. You will leave with an understanding of what the Balanced Scorecard is and how it can be used to implement strategy in not-for-profit organisations, including some common pitfalls to avoid.

Will Campbell is an expert facilitator and has worked with organisations including Farm Africa, International HIV/AIDS Alliance, and WSPA to develop strategy. Before joining =mc Will worked for fifteen years in international relief and development, for organisations including CARE International, DFID, ODI and Catholic Relief Services.

Bernard Rossb) The Good to Great framework

Bernard Ross, Director, The Management Centre

When your strategy development is about more than just “business as usual”, you need a different approach. When you are not in trouble but want to do better, then the Good to Great framework can escalate organisational performance. This workshop takes you through the seven steps underpinning the framework.

Bernard is an expert in strategic thinking and organisational change. He has worked with a wide range of not-for-profit organisations over 25 years, including the British Red Cross, Amnesty International, Greenpeace International, UNICEF, Oxfam and the British Film Institute.

Kate Gilmore

c) Scenario planning for out-of-the-box thinking

Kate Gilmore, Principal Management Consultant, The Management Centre

The past is an unreliable predictor of the future. How can you “future-proof” your organisation? Scenario planning offers a practical approach that can liberate innovative thinking about strategic direction. This interactive workshop will introduce you to scenario planning through a mixture of case studies and practical tools. You will leave with an understanding of how you might use it in your organisation’s strategy development.

Before joining The Management Centre, Kate spent the last decade in the number two seat at Amnesty International's HQ, driving one of the largest INGO transformations of the last 10 years. Previously, she spent four years leading a national Amnesty branch and before that she worked in a range of management positions within the public health sector.
