Overview

Come to this seminar and networking session on 20 October 2008 to hear key insights from senior representatives of some of the UK's most influential not-for-profits on driving change in their organisations.

Using case studies and examples from a range of organisations including NSPCC (and its merger with ChildLine), Alzheimer's Society, Médecins Sans Frontières and SightSavers International, this interactive seminar will be of particular value to senior managers, CEOs and HR professionals across the not-for-profit sector.

Benefits

With seven change experts from not-for-profit and commercial backgrounds, this seminar will help you discover how to initiate and lead successful change processes - from full-scale mergers and ‘one organisation' initiatives to coping with radical re-structures.

  • Access new ideas on how to engage and align staff, volunteers and board members
  • Enjoy a confidential networking opportunity and find out how other not-for-profits are managing change
  • Explore key stages and models in rolling out change and establish how to overcome challenges

Sessions

The day will involve a mixture of plenaries and interactive workshops, which include case studies and speaker presentations.

We'll use examples from a range of industries and settings to explore what we can learn from inside and outside the charity sector.

Topics include:

Create a powerful case for change

Discover the four basic psychological models that will help you design and sell your change-proposition and in the process energise staff, volunteers, donors and board members.

Merger or a takeover?

With the economics of mergers a strong driver in the sector, what are the challenges in combining the culture and structure of two organisations - and how do you overcome them? And how do you decide if it's really a merger or actually a diplomatic takeover?

Discover 8-steps to a successful transformation

All successful change programmes follow eight key steps. Discover what these steps are, the competencies you need for them and how you can ensure you implement them.

5 ways to derail your change process

Why do many change processes fail? Find ways to assess where your change process might be at risk and the negative implications. Discover how to recover from a badly set up process.

The role of leadership

in almost all change processes there is a key role for the senior team and especially the CEO. What style of leadership is needed during change? And how do you choose and adapt the right leadership style for each stage of change?

Engage individuals and teams

Whole organisation communication and engagement is essential in successful change. Learn from practical examples on how to engage teams across organisations and even across countries and cultures in your change initiative.

Why don't they all stand up and cheer?

Maintaining motivation is one of the hardest parts of any change process. We'll look at what the latest thinking in motivational theory tells us about responses to change and how we can anticipate and manage them.

Speakers

The seminar will be led by =mc's change experts Bernard Ross and Ian Vale. It will be chaired by =mc's Principal Consultant Judy Beard.

NSPCC/ChildLine

Kath Abrahams, Director of Fundraising

Kath was a key part of the senior team, which led the successful merger of ChildLine and NSPCC in 2007. She'll explore how to manage and engage a small organisation with a much larger one while still keeping the benefits of two highly effective organisational cultures.

Alzheimer's Society

Jo Swinhoe, Fundraising Director

Jo has been a Director of the Alzheimer's Society since 2005. As a member of the senior management team, there was an imperative to focus the organisation on leading the cause of dementia. Jo will share her experiences in how the management team went about managing the change of aligning the directorates, staff and volunteers into one unified organisation capable of becoming the defining cause of the 21st Century.

Médecins Sans Frontières

Paul Foreman, Chair of UK Board

Paul joined the voluntary sector in overseas relief and development in 1993, working internationally with Save the Children and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Paul will explain how MSF are working hard to overcome challenges in culture and structure across four nations to create faster and more effective responses to meet unprecedented challenges around the globe.

SightSavers International

Petra Ingram, Director of Finance & Support Services

Petra Ingram joined SightSavers from Gilette where she led the implementation of a major restructure project across their European operations. She is an important part of the senior team charged with transforming SightSavers from its UK-based ‘medical' model of disability to a truly international NGO working to address wider development issues related to sight impairment.

Groundwork UK

Speaker to be confirmed
Groundwork UK is a national agency promoting environmental concern. =mc has been working with the Groundwork London team to help integrate independent trusts into one London body for a more effective response to the capital's regeneration challenges. The speaker from Groundwork will walk through the
highlights and challenges of their change roadmap.

=mc

Bernard Ross, Director

Bernard has advised on change initiatives for UK-based and international organisations - from UNICEF International to the National Trust for Scotland to Amnesty International. His specialism is on leadership and its role in linking strategy and culture in new and radical ways.

Bernard will be sharing his experience on why change programmes work or do not - and how to make sure yours does.

At WOMANKIND Worldwide, we have to respond to an ever changing external environment. After an =mc Change programme I left with a thorough knowledge of the impact of change, how people react differently to it – and most importantly – how to plan and manage effective change processes. In less than a year I've noticed radical improvements in the way the whole organisation thinks through and implements change.

Brita Fernandez Schmidt, Head of Programmes & Policy, WOMANKIND Worldwide

At Amnesty International we have worked hard to create a powerful and effective organisational change that will help us protect human rights more effectively. =mc has been incredibly helpful in guiding us through a complex change process - providing coaching, delivering training and helping us design a new organisational strategy.
