Laura specialises in project management and management development
Laura has 8 years experience in the charity sector, in particular developing and delivering volunteer and community projects. Before joining =mc she was Project Officer at Sustrans, managing their London volunteer programme, focussing on project management, learning and development, and support and advice for staff and volunteers.
I’ve had a busy start to the year, and I’ve been working with organisations all over the world from United World College South East Asia, supporting staff in embedding best practice project management, to working with the World Food Programme in building people’s confidence in their influencing and negotiating skills.
A common challenge we’re hearing is how busy people are feeling, getting pulled in different directions trying to balance work and home. I’ve been supporting people with this at a number of organisations, including Evolve Housing and Support, the General Chiropractic Council and Joseph Rowntree Foundation, where I have delivered our Time Management and Managing Multiple Priorities programme through a series of online bitesize sessions. This programme really helps people gain control and make important choices about where to focus their time and energy.
In the next few months I’ll be working with managers from Marie Curie, Options for Supported Living and Recovery Focus to deliver tailored management development programmes in our virtual classroom. We’ll be exploring a range of topics that are affecting managers right now including; how do I best support my team when we are working remotely? How do I keep my team motivated in times of high challenge? How do I have effective performance management conversations with those I manage when at a distance?
I started my career in the environmental charity sector developing and delivering community conservation projects before moving on to recruit, train and manage staff and volunteers to deliver excellent customer service for the National Trust.
Most recently I have been the lead project officer working on innovative volunteer-led projects within communities across London, including working with the Greater London Authority (GLA) to raise awareness about air pollution in London. I was responsible for the development and delivery of the Sustrans volunteer strategy as well as the learning and development programme for volunteers. My love of developing and delivering training to volunteers and staff for projects and professional development has led me to concentrate on a career in learning and development.
